Preserving the jaguar by protecting and restoring its habitat
Perched on a commanding hilltop with breathtaking views of Turrialba Volcano as it towers above the gaping expanse of the Reventazon River Valley, this property has one of the most stunning vistas in Costa Rica. To the northwards those views stretch all the way down to the distant Caribbean coast.
The exceptional panoramic views can be enjoyed from a selection of fine buildings. The property includes a 2-story wooden house with a wrap-around balcony, 4 wooden cabins and a large salon for hosting events. The swimming pool has an outdoor bar and kitchen, and a pathway that leads to a spectacular observation deck that offers magnificent views of the volcano and the valley below.
The property includes 2 acres of existing forest cover which line a stream that passes through it. The remainder of the land has been deforested to create cattle pasture. Its location on a quiet backroad leading down to the Reventazon reservoir means that there is very little passing traffic, making this outstanding hilltop retreat an extremely tranquil topical hideaway.
TThe hilltop retreat is surrounded by 35 acres of cattle land which requires reforestation in order to restore this important section of the Barbilla-Destierro Biological Corridor to its former glory. The property sits at the northern end of the Reventazon reservoir where jaguars have been seen to swim across it. Restoring this large hole in the forest cover of the corridor will make it easier, and safer for jaguars and other endangered species to migrate from the Central Volcanic Cordillera to the Talamanca mountains.
The Jaguar Project can provide all of the expertise and assistance required to implement a 30-acre reforestation program here to replace the open cattle land with forest cover. The program will focus on native trees species that are beneficial to wildlife and the majority of the trees can be provided by the ICE (Costa Rican Electricity Institute).
The numerous existing structures provide the perfect infrastructure for a first-class Eco-retreat offering bird-watching, horseback riding and stunning views of the Reventazon valley. The large events hall would lend itself perfectly to becoming a visitor’s center for environmental education. Any new development here should be kept to a minimum in order to ensure that this property continues to be used as an important migration route for felines.
The property is located 1 kilometer drive down a well-maintained dirt road which branches off the main paved highway 10 that connects Siquirres and Turrialba. All of the necessary municipal amenities are only 20 minutes drive away in the town of Siquirres. The nearest restaurants and a local store are less than 10 minutes away in the tiny village of Guayacan.
The property has a stream running through it providing abundant clean water, and electricity is connected to the national grid.
The closest town of Siquirres is located halfway between San Jose and the Caribbean Coast. The property is 2 hours drive from Costa Rica’s main international airport, and just an hour away from the nearest regional airport at Guapiles. This part of Costa Rica is exceptionally well suited to environmental and conservation activities. The Reventazon Valley is surrounded by multiple national parks and reserves including Barbilla National Park, Guayabo National Monument, Turrialba Volcano National Park, Tapanti National Park, Rio Macho Forest Reserve and the Pacuare Forest Reserve.
The world famous Pacuare River with the best white-water rafting in Central America is just 25 minutes drive away. Just beyond Siquirres are the boundless natural wonders of the Caribbean Coast including the world famous biodiversity hotspot Tortuguero National Park.
