CONSERVATION POTENTIAL
Finca Piedras Blancas occupies a hill in the Fila Costeña mountain range that overlooks Piedras Blancas National Park. Piedras Blancas is one of the most important and biodiverse national parks in Costa Rica. It used to be a part of the world famous biodiversity hot-spot Corcovado National Park, but in 1999 the government decided to make it into a separate park. 96 species of mammals have been recorded there and it is particularly rich in species of amphibians and reptiles. The La Gamba Field Station located within its borders is one of the country's foremost biological research stations. Sitting directly above the park, this property is in a location that is a high priority for conservation.
One of Costa Rica's largest and most important conservation projects is the Ridge to Reef program led by Osa Conservation. Through this ambitious restoration program Osa Conservation plans to plant 100,000 trees a year in order to strengthen the biological corridor that connects Corcovado, Piedras Blancas and La Amistad National Parks. The joint threats of habitat loss and climate change are putting the Osa Peninsula's globally significant biodiversity at risk. The Ridge to Reef program aims to alleviate this threat to biodiversity by creating an altitudinal corridor through which endangered species of mammals can migrate to higher altitudes by passing from Corcovado and Piedras Blancas National Parks at sea level, up to La Amistad National Park in the high Talamanca mountains.
The image above shows the trajectory of the Ridge to Reef program's conservation efforts, with the location of Finca Piedras Blancas marked with a red cross. The property lies exactly on the projected migration path of large mammals such as jaguars, precisely where conservation is required most. The owner of this property also owns 200 acres of pristine forest that lie behind the property and are also available for conservation.
ECO-TOURISM POTENTIAL
The outstanding views of the Piedras Blancas ecosystem and the Gulfo Dulce that this hilltop property provides, presents the perfect platform on which to create a first class Eco-Tourism enterprise in harmony with nature. The owner of the property built four cabins here 5 years ago in order to start an Eco-tourism retreat, but because of the pandemic they were never used. The property is an eco-tourism business waiting to happen. The huge tract of primary rainforest that lies in the hills behind the property offers the ideal place for adventurous treks into deep untouched jungle.
Finca Piedras Blancas's geographical location also gives it easy access to multiple popular environmental hot-spots. The town of Sierpe with its mangrove tours and boat services to Corcovado National Park and Isla de Canó is only 45 minutes away. Piedras Blancas National Park is right on its doorstep, and the Marino Ballena National Park with its famous Whale's Tail is just an hour away. The Gulfo Dulce and the many wonders of the Osa peninsula are visible from here and less than an hours drive south.
The property is also located close to Costa Rica's most fascinating archaeological sites. The UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Batambal, El Silencio, Finca 6 and Grijalba showcase the mysterious stone spheres of the ancient Diquis Culture, and they are all within an hour's drive of here.
ACCESS AND AMENITIES
Finca Piedras Blancas is a fruit lovers dream. The owner is a master cultivator who has created several acres of fabulous fruit trees of all kinds. There is enough fruit growing on the property to start a successful fruit selling business.
The property provides its own electricity by using solar panels, and fresh water is supplied by its own well. The property also includes a large covered workshop space.
The nearest supermarket and restaurants are located just 10 minutes drive downhill in the small village of Piedras Blancas. From there it is 30 minutes drive east to Rio Claro, or 30 minutes west to Palmar Norte. Both of those small towns have all of the necessary amenities including banks and government offices. The capital San Jose is a 4 and a half hour drive by car, or alternatively you can fly there in half an hour from two different local domestic airports. Golfito airport and Palmar Sur airport are both 30 minutes drive from here.
Finca Piedras Blancas is located in the far south-eastern corner of Costa Rica just an hour away from the border with Panama. The border town of Paso Canoas with its tax-free goods is by far the cheapest place in Costa Rica to buy anything from food to refrigerators. People travel from all over Costa Rica to buy things there. Living in close proximity to Paso Canoas offers you a strong financial advantage.
