Preserving the jaguar by protecting and restoring its habitat
La Puesta del Sol is one of the most charming and unique Eco-Lodges in the Osa region. It is the only first class tourist operation that has commanding views out over the Terraba-Sierpe Wetlands. Its panoramic vista of the meandering estuaries of the Sierpe and Terraba rivers and distant Isla del Caño is hypnotically beautiful.
The lodge has a restaurant with a bar, 6 cabins and a swimming pool that all share the same iconic view. 3 acres of the property are a fruit plantation with a wide selection of mature fruit trees including an abundance of good quality pineapple, lychees, mangosteen and coffee.
The Terraba-Sierpe National Wetlands that the lodge overlooks are the second largest mangrove forest in Central America, and they are one of Costa Rica’s most important and biologically diverse ecosystems. The property backs on that thriving ecosystem and 10 hectares of it was deforested decades ago to make way for cattle grazing.
The huge conservation potential that this property offers is to restore those degraded areas by reforesting them with a wide selection of native tree species that are beneficial to wildlife. The Jaguar Project can provide all of the resources and the expertise necessary to restore the property’s degraded areas and grow new jungles on them that will enhance connectivity and boost biodiversity.
La Puesta del Sol is a successful turn-key tourism business that receives 5-star reviews on Tripadvisor and is incredibly popular with its visitors. It welcomes a steady stream of tourists all year round who are enchanted by its stunning views and beautiful surroundings.
Visitors here can choose between a wide variety of fabulous Eco-tourism tours and activities. These include boat trips to Corcovado National Park, Isla del Caño, and the Sierpe mangroves. There are also archeological trips to see the nearby UNESCO World Heritage Sites where the mysterious stone spheres can be seen, as well as cultural trips to visit the Boruka indigenous tribe. Plus horseback rides to the local waterfalls.
The lodge is just 10 minutes drive on a good quality un-made road from the famous tourist town of Sierpe. A regular and reliable ferry service takes cars across the Sierpe river to the town which offers a good selection of local shops and restaurants. 15 minutes drive beyond Sierpe is the market town of Palmar Norte where banks and all of the necessary public amenities are located.
Alternative access to the lodge is also provided by 2 different unmade roads that lead into the Osa peninsula. One of them go to Drakes Bay which is an hour and a half away, and the other road leads to Los Mogosand the Gulfo Dulce.
The property is connected to the national electricity grid. Water is currently pumped from the adjacent property which belongs to the current owner, but can also be pumped from the property’s own river.
The capital San Jose is 4 and a half hours drive by car, or alternatively you can fly there in half an hour from 2 different nearby domestic airports. Palmar Sur airport is only 30 minutes away, and Drakes Bay airport is one and a half hours away.
